6-Foot-10 Former NBA Player Gets Tossed from WNBA Game for Wearing a Shirt with the Definition of 'Woman'

Enes Kanter Freedom was sitting courtside at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Sunday night, wearing a black T-shirt that read "WOMAN noun. adult human female." By the third quarter, security was escorting the 6-foot-10, 11-year NBA veteran out of the building.

His offense: the dictionary.

The incident unfolded during a timeout in the Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game with Indiana leading 81-75. Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud began walking toward Freedom's baseline seat and shouting at him. Freedom stood, arms outstretched, and took steps toward the court before arena security cut him off and directed him to leave.

The crowd at Wintrust Arena booed as Freedom was escorted out. Cloud spoke with team and league security after the game — a 113-90 Chicago loss — but did not address the media.

Chicago Sky player Azura Stevens offered the league-approved summary: "There was just a fan incident and the security handled it. We're going to just focus on the game."

A fan incident. The 11-year NBA veteran who played for five different teams, who gave up his Turkish citizenship to become an American citizen, who has been one of the loudest voices against human rights abuses in China — reduced to "a fan incident" because he wore a shirt containing a noun and its definition.

Freedom posted on X after the ejection: "I just got kicked out of a WNBA game for supporting WOMEN!" He followed up with a second post: "It's always women hating on other women."

The confrontation didn't start in the third quarter, either. Freedom posted video before tipoff showing a mob of progressive fans confronting him outside the arena, captioning it, "We are getting attacked before the WNBA game in Chicago." One spectator made an obscene gesture. Another shouted at him, "You were sorry in the league!"

So the sequence went like this: progressive fans harassed him before the game, a player on the home team initiated a verbal confrontation during the game, and the person removed by security was the guy in the dictionary shirt.

Freedom has been making this exact point for months. He declared for the WNBA draft earlier this year, announcing he identifies as a woman — an obvious piece of political theater designed to expose the league's transgender eligibility policies. Former NBA player Royce White did the same. The WNBA's response has been to treat both men as nuisances rather than engage the underlying question: if biological sex doesn't determine eligibility, on what grounds do you exclude a 6-foot-10 former professional male athlete?

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert hasn't addressed that question directly. Neither has Natasha Cloud, who chose to yell at a seated spectator instead. The league's position appears to be that men who identify as women should be welcomed into women's sports — unless those men are doing it to prove that the policy is absurd, in which case they're disruptive fans who need to be removed.

Meanwhile, players like Sophie Cunningham have dealt with injuries competing against physically superior opponents, and Caitlin Clark — the biggest draw in the league's history — has stayed conspicuously silent on the entire debate.

The WNBA could have ignored Freedom sitting courtside in his dictionary shirt. He bought a ticket. He was watching a basketball game. Instead, one of its players initiated a confrontation, security removed the spectator, and the league generated exactly the headline Freedom wanted.

A league that can't decide whether biological males belong in women's basketball just ejected a man for defining the word "woman." The dictionary didn't used to be controversial. Then again, neither did women's sports.
