Drug Prices Have Fallen Every Single Month of 2026 — The Biggest Drop in 60 Years — and Nobody Will Tell You

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released new data this week showing prescription drug prices have dropped 3.9% since President Trump took office. They've declined every single month of 2026. It's the steepest annual decline in over 60 years — the largest since 1963.

The numbers aren't subtle. Nonprescription drug prices fell 2.4% over the past year. Medical-care commodities dropped 2.7%. GLP-1 medications — the weight-loss drugs that were running north of $1,000 per prescription — now start at $149. That's not a coupon. That's the price.

Those GLP-1 reductions are part of TrumpRx, the administration's platform that brought 17 major drug manufacturers to the table with voluntary pricing agreements. Eli Lilly, AbbVie, Johnson & Johnson — companies that collectively cover 86% of the branded drug market — signed on to price cuts ranging from 50% to 90% on high-cost medications. The program has generated $700 million in patient savings so far, according to Just The News.

Rep. Jimmy Patronis, Republican of Florida, framed the approach: "Without even twisting an arm, without trying to pass a new bill, he brought all these players together with TrumpRX to lower the cost of prescription drugs."

That's the part the coverage skips. There's no new law. No mandate. No price-control scheme that sends pharmaceutical companies fleeing to friendlier markets. The Most Favored Nation pricing policy set the baseline — American consumers shouldn't pay more than what the same drugs cost in other developed nations. RAND analyses from 2022 showed U.S. prescription prices were 3 to 4 times higher than in comparable OECD countries. As of 2024, prices were 5.5 times what they were in 1985.

The administration's critics will point out that voluntary agreements aren't binding, that companies could raise prices again tomorrow. Which would be a more compelling objection if the prices weren't actually falling — every month, across every category, by the largest margin in six decades. At some point the theoretical concern about what companies might do runs into the BLS data showing what they're actually doing.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is projecting $10 billion in pharmaceutical savings this fiscal year alone. That's not a press release number. That's the VA's own budget math for 33 OECD-benchmarked drug categories.

For context, we spent the better part of a decade listening to promises about prescription drug reform. Hearings, task forces, the occasional CEO hauled before a committee for a scolding. Prices went up. More hearings. More scoldings. Prices went up again. The 2022 RAND data confirmed what everyone at the pharmacy counter already knew — we were paying 3 to 4 times what the rest of the developed world paid for the same pills.

Now prices are falling. Every month. By the widest margin since Kennedy was president.

If this were happening under any other administration, it would be the lead story on every network and the subject of a documentary. Instead, it's a BLS data release that gets filed between the weather and the crossword.
