At 7:30 a.m. on September 2, an illegal alien was the subject of an ICE operation on Route 130 in North Brunswick, New Jersey. He initially stopped. Then he floored it — running a red light at high speed and slamming into a Tesla driven by Penelope Cohen, the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen, a Democrat. ICE officers had given repeated verbal warnings before attempting to stop him. He responded by running.
Penelope Cohen was hospitalized with a leg injury. Her husband's party spent the last year making sure that exact illegal alien would be free to run.
Here's the policy chain. Governor Mikie Sherrill signed the Immigrant Trust Directive into state law in March 2026, codifying a statewide sanctuary framework that bars local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Officers cannot ask about immigration status. They cannot notify ICE when someone is being released. They cannot share personal information for civil immigration enforcement purposes. The whole point, as Sherrill sold it, was to make illegal aliens feel safe.
Mission accomplished. This particular illegal alien was comfortable enough to be operating in New Jersey in the first place — and confident enough to flee at high speed when ICE finally caught up with him. He was apprehended on foot after the crash. Penelope Cohen was taken to the hospital.
That's not a bug in the Trust Directive. That's the feature.
Republican State Assemblyman Paul Kanitra responded: "We all fought against it. We told them that this would create chaos, and it seems like Democrats are unable to take accountability for their own actions." State Republican Senator Mike Testa: "I think it has only emboldened illegal aliens to engage in illegal behavior. This illegal alien was stopped lawfully by federal authorities, ran through a red light, fleeing federal authorities."
Both men said exactly this when Sherrill was pushing the directive through. They were told they were fearmongering.
Then there's Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman's response to the crash. "On Monday, an ICE vehicle drove into a prayer vigil outside Delaney Hall and drove over a woman's foot. Today, it appears an ICE involved car chase resulted in an accident involving the wife of the Mayor of East Brunswick," she posted. "ICE's lawlessness is putting innocent people in harms way."
ICE's lawlessness. An illegal alien ran a red light fleeing federal officers, crashed into a civilian, and the elected Democrat's takeaway is that the enforcement agents caused the problem. That framing only holds if you've already decided that enforcing immigration law is itself illegitimate — which is precisely what the Trust Directive assumes.
The pattern in every sanctuary jurisdiction runs the same way. Pass a policy that shields illegal aliens from federal enforcement. Watch as individuals flee, resist, or ignore the law. When someone gets hurt, blame the officers who were trying to prevent the exact scenario the policy created. Watson Coleman's statement isn't a mistake. It's the playbook.
The governor who signed the law enabling it is a Democrat. The representative defending the flight from police is a Democrat. The mayor whose wife got hit is a Democrat.
The Trust Directive was supposed to protect communities. It just put one of its own architects' families in the hospital.
