Sen. Rand Paul gave every Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee an access code to review the evidence his investigation had collected on Anthony Fauci. Not a single one of them used it. Not once.
But they had plenty to say about being "shut out."
Ranking Democrat Gary Peters of Michigan stood up during Tuesday's hearing — July 29, 2026 — and accused Paul's committee of selectively releasing records and hiding portions of the committee website from public view. The implication was clear: Republicans were running a rigged investigation, keeping Democrats in the dark so they couldn't challenge the findings.
Paul called the accusation "categorically false." And then he dropped the receipts. Republicans had created a dedicated reading room — hosted at paul.senate.gov/readingroom — containing over 1,000 pages of collected evidence on COVID origins, risky research funding, and Fauci's role in all of it. Democrats were given an access code to review everything before it went public. According to Paul, "no Democrat ever signed up for it."
So the minority party had the password. They had the URL. They had the invitation. They just didn't want to know what was inside.
The hearing itself was a spectacle. Fauci, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director, invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly — declining to answer questions about his 1,141-page personal diary, his communications during the pandemic, and his role in funding the kind of research that may have started the whole catastrophe.
But one entry from that diary couldn't be unread. Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma read aloud from page 166, dated May 6, 2020. Fauci had written about a conversation with former CDC Director Robert Redfield the night before: "Had conversation with Bob Redfield last night about the fact that >1 million children world-wide have missed their measles vaccinations because of the shutdown... This is terrible and needs to be addressed since on that basis alone, there would be far, far more excess deaths from measles among children than coronavirus deaths among children."
Fauci knew. In May of 2020, he knew lockdowns were killing more kids through missed vaccinations than COVID itself ever would. He wrote it down in his own diary. And when Lankford asked whether he'd ever briefed the White House task force on this, Fauci's answer was three words: "I'm sorry, senator."
Not "I briefed them." Not "We addressed it." Just sorry.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut tried a different play — comparing Paul's investigation to McCarthyism and claiming there was a "well-founded fear" that the hearing existed solely to "trap Dr. Fauci in some kind of criminal wrongdoing." Fauci's attorney, David Schertler, went further, accusing Paul of being "single-mindedly fixated on seeing Dr. Fauci prosecuted for imaginary crimes" — before being removed from the hearing for attempting an unauthorized statement.
The McCarthyism comparison is a familiar move. Every time congressional oversight gets uncomfortable for the right people, someone invokes the ghost of Joe McCarthy. It's meant to make the investigation sound like persecution. Except McCarthy didn't have 1,141 pages of the target's own handwriting. McCarthy didn't have a diary entry where the subject admitted children were dying because of policies he publicly championed. Rand Paul has both.
The pattern here isn't complicated. Democrats were offered full access to the evidence. They declined. When the evidence became public and looked devastating, they cried foul. Peters accused Republicans of hiding things. Blumenthal accused them of McCarthyism. Schertler accused them of imaginary crimes. Three different objections, all aimed at the same target: making sure nobody talks about what's actually in the documents.
And what's in the documents is a man who privately acknowledged lockdowns were causing mass childhood death while publicly defending those same lockdowns. A man whose own diary contradicts his testimony. A man whose legal team is now arguing that investigating any of this constitutes persecution.
Democrats were given the key to the room. They chose to stand outside and complain about the door being locked.
